Maddie’s® Shelter Medicine Program at the University of Florida
Dr. Garcia is the Course Director for the Shelter Practice Clerkship at Alachua County Animal Services. Prior to this, he held a position as herd health veterinarian at an open admission municipal shelter in South Florida. The combined annual intake of cats and dogs is approximately 18-20,000. He has experience with population management, sanitation, outbreak prevention, high quality high volumes spay and neuter, county disaster response planning, developing standard operating procedures and protocols for shelter operations and expert witness testimony for civil and criminal animal cruelty. He took the scenic route to shelter medicine as he worked in small towns, big cities, municipal shelters, and private practices prior to entering the shelter medicine family.
His long term goals include Board certification through the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners, supporting the continued growth of the Maddie’s® Shelter Medicine Program at The University of Florida, and contributing furthering research in the area of shelter medicine.
