On May 23, 2025, the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine will celebrate the graduation of 23 students who have completed not only their Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degrees, but also the Professional Certificate in Shelter Medicine, a credential available exclusively at UF.
These students have dedicated themselves to a focused, 15-credit curriculum that spans all four years of veterinary school, including electives, clinical clerkships, and externship experiences. The certificate prepares graduates to enter the field with practical, real-world skills tailored for careers in animal shelters, spay/neuter clinics, access to care initiatives, and disaster and cruelty response, while also equipping them to integrate those services into general practice to support pets and families in their communities.
Throughout their time at UF, these students have contributed meaningfully to the animal welfare system, many performing hundreds of surgeries, supporting lifesaving shelter operations, and volunteering their time to help vulnerable animals in need. Now, as they launch their careers, they carry with them not only veterinary degrees, but the specialized training and commitment to make a difference in the lives of animals and the people who love them.
