New World Screwworm (NWS) is an emerging concern for animal shelters, rescue organizations, and community cat programs. While companion animal cases remain uncommon, organizations should be prepared to recognize the disease, implement preventive measures, and stay informed as recommendations evolve.
To support those efforts, the UF Shelter Medicine Program has assembled the following collection of resources from trusted veterinary, animal welfare, and government organizations. Together with the accompanying statement from a Shelter Medicine academic council, these materials provide current guidance on prevention, diagnosis, treatment, transport considerations, and operational planning to help organizations protect animals while maintaining essential lifesaving programs.
