2024 Florida Shelter-Level Data

Data Tables, PDFs, Charts / Graphs are currently UNAVAILABLE as the site is undergoing updates.

As we are in our current data collection period for calendar year 2024, we will not be posting data or graphics until the majority of shelters have reported for 2024.

There will be changes to prior years’ data, like every year, as we vet, clean, investigate, and correct any discrepancies.

Thank you for your understanding! Encourage your local shelters to submit their data if they haven’t already! See the updated list of completed shelters here.

New in 2025:

The Florida Shelter Animal Census uses the standardized data definitions established for Shelter Animals Count in their Animal Welfare Glossary.

Rate definitions and formulas will be provided on our website, but the data tables will not include any rates that shelters typically use to show Lifesaving Percentages (such as “Live Release Rate” or “Save Rate”). Without consistent, accurate data, and transparency in the calculations used, our ability to clarify and quantify the problem and its causes and determine the most effective solutions is severely compromised.

As shelters are free to choose their preferred Lifesaving Percentage formulas, it’s important to note that these different formulas can make it very difficult to compare apples to apples. Be sure to know what formula is being used to calculate the Lifesaving Percentages you’re viewing.

It’s best practice to include your key data along with your Lifesaving Percentage as the Lifesaving Percentage on its own doesn’t tell the complete story, nor does the data on its own.

Make sure you explain what formula you use to calculate your chosen Lifesaving Percentage.

Intake/Outcome Data Self-Reported by Shelters

Data for the Florida Shelter Animal Census is self-reported by individual animal shelters and then compiled for statewide statistical summaries by the Shelter Medicine Program at the University of Florida.

See the Florida Shelter Animal Census data definitions, rate calculations, other metrics collected (but may not be displayed in the table below), and the research limitations.

  • We collect DOG and CAT data only.
  • TOTAL means both DOG + CAT.
  • PER 1,000 RESIDENTS means the total of the field (Intake or Non-Live Outcomes) divided by the shelter’s county population, multiplied by 1,000.
  • Shelters that have data listed as UNAVAILABLE (UN) were unable to submit data due to software/data losses or because the agency wasn’t functioning at full capacity or recording data.
  • Shelters that have data listed as MISSING (MIS) are working on their data submissions currently.
  • Shelters that have data listed as NOT APPLICABLE (NA) do not record those specific data points due to policy or intake restrictions (cat only facilities, etc.).
